ANNOUNCING: The Green Lady and GuysDrinkingBeer.com Team Up For a Unique Craft Beer Week Event: “South of 80”

In Events by The Guys

For months, the respective ladies and gentlemen behind the new craft beer bar The Green Lady and noted Chicago-based beer blog GuysDrinkingBeer.com have been working behind the scenes to put together a unique event full of beers from an underappreciated area of the Midwest: Downstate Illinois and the St. Louis area.

Now, it can finally be announced:

Join us Tuesday, May 22 starting at 7 p.m. for “South of 80: A Celebration of Downstate Brewers.” Its going to be a night of incredible beers rarely available in the metro area, with many of these unique beers available for the very first time anywhere in Chicago!

Scheduled To Participate:

Join us to sample beers from St. Louis’ Six Row Brewing Company and Moline’s Bent River Brewing Company, Rolling Meadows Brewery from Springfield and Murphysboro’s Big Muddy Brewing. Representatives from each brewery are expected to attend, so come try their beer for the first time – and then meet the talented people who created it.

Of the beers to be made available, head organizer Ryan Hermes says “We’re excited to showcase some very unique beers from some passionate downstate brewers including; a top selling beer in all of the Quad Cities, ales and lagers brewed with locally grown ingredients from a farm near the state capitol, creative cask offerings from an up-and-coming St. Louis brewery and the brewery that became the face of last year’s fight over a small brewer’s right to self-distribute..”

We plan to have multiple beers from each brewery available for purchase, including rare offerings and cask brews. We’ve sampled nearly all the beers to be made available, and we can say with authority that these are high quality, flavorful and well-crafted beers that you’re not going to want to miss.  A tap list with specific offerings will be released closer to the date of the event.

For years, Chicago’s beer scene has been focused  on the beers of Michigan, Wisconsin and of course, our own booming beer scene. Two of the Guys hail from downstate – Springfield and Effingham – and wanted to showcase some of the amazing beer they knew was available in and around their hometowns, colloquially (and sometimes even derisively) known by Chicagoans as “South of 80.”

There are going to be a lot of events over the course of Chicago’s Craft Beer Week, but nothing quite like this. Don’t miss the chance to sample what these brewers have to offer – it might be a long time before they’re available in Chicago again.
