Review: Goose Island Pepe Nero

Goose Island Pepe Nero

Goose Island Pepe Nero
Saison, 6% ABV

Sayeth the Guys:

Ryan: This is part of Goose Island’s Fulton & Wood series, reserved for their special, limited release beers. I had the Pepe Nero, a black Saison brewed with peppercorns, on tap at Sheffield’s.

The beer pours a fireplace soot black, with little head, and a bit of white lacing.

It smells…spicy?  Cloves, floral hops and chocolate dominate what is a somewhat tame nose.

The taste, though, was anything but tame.  You get some fruit and a little funk up front, followed by a bit of chocolate or molasses and then some rye and the black peppercorns on the finish.  The chocolate and rye become more pronounced as this beer warms up.

This is a very interesting take on a Saison.  At first I didn’t like it that much but once it warmed it grew on me.
