Review: Surly Four

Surly Four

Surly Says:

Surly’s Fourth Anniversary beer. An iced double espresso milk stout. In the Surly brewhouse brewing our Anniversary beers means one thing, forget what you know and try something different. Brewed with too many Espresso beans, too much Roasted Barley, and a healthy dose of Milk sugar, this Double Espresso Milk Stout has layers of chocolate, espresso and smoke flavors intertwined with a velvety lush body.

Surly Four
Milk Stout, 10% ABV

Sayeth the Guys:

Ryan: I am fortunate to live steps from a fantastic neighborhood bar in Chicago that has a really great vibe, good music, awesome comfort food and solid beer.  Occasionally, I will wander in to the Four Moon Tavern and find a gem.  This was one of those nights.

Four arrived in a barleywine style glass, pitch black with just a bit of creamy, tan head.  A good whiff reminds me of the first time you open a bag or can of coffee; that sudden rush of roasted beans aroma.

This tastes like the greatest iced coffee that has yet to be made.  A roasted coffee bean/espresso/iced coffee flavor is followed by a rush of chocolate and then more coffee.

Normally, I would let a beer warm up a bit to see what other flavors developed – but I didn’t want to.  Too much iced coffee/espresso flavors to enjoy.  And, despite being a 10% ABV beer, the alcohol is very well hidden.

Find it.  Drink it.  Order a second one – I wish I had.
