Review: Sprecher Black Bavarian

In Beer Reviews by Ryan

Sprecher says:

“This intensely dark Kulmbacher style lager has a superb malt complexity with the distinctive flavors and aromas of coffee, caramel and chocolate. A renowned smoothness and a creamy, tan head make it a world champion.”

Sprecher Black Bavarian
Schwarzbier, 6% ABV

Ryan: Over the last year I have developed a profound appreciation for the schwarzbier style.  It’s the best of both worlds; you get a light in body beer and a fairly low ABV that is loaded with intense roasted flavors, caramel, toffee and coffee beans.  The Black Bavarian is a world class version of the style.  Special thanks to frequent commenter Ben for providing this in a trade.

This beer pours black as night with a an inch or two of chocolatey, tan head billowing up to the rim of the glass.  Intense, robust and roasted aromas spill out of the glass; caramel, toffee, dark chocolate and french roasted coffee beans.  The flavors are right in line with the nose highlighted by rich, dark chocolate, roasted coffee beans, toasted malts and a bit of molasses.  This beer finishes a little dry with some earthy hops and a dark chocolate bitterness.

Black Bavarian is full and creamy.  In fact, it’s a little heavier than other schwarzbier’s I’ve had.  But I would expect that with the intense flavors.  I would love to put this up to a blind taste test with any stout or porter.  I bet the Black Bavarian could take down the best.  I stand by my “World Class” title for this beer.  No doubt.
