Argus Brewery, its South Side location and historic building make for a tour like no other<\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is a mash tun\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThen it goes into the fermenter…\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd here\u2019s our bottling line\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sure, a brewery tour can provide a neat, behind-the-scenes look at the place where your favorite beer comes to life. But, let\u2019s be honest \u2013 if you\u2019ve done one\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then there\u2019s Argus Brewery.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHow many of you have done a brewery tour before?\u201d Argus beer historian Nick Lubovich begins before a crowd of hands go in the air. \u201cWell, if this tour anything like those other ones, then we\u2019re doing it wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Argus is not doing it wrong. Not even close.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What they\u2019re doing twice every Saturday is so much more than just a brewery tour. It\u2019s a Chicago history lesson, with a brewery tour tucked neatly inside. And it\u2019s worth the trek down I-94 to 111th Street \u2013 or even spending $8 for a round-trip Metra Electric ride from Michigan & Randolph to the brewery\u2019s front door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pullman workers would walk through alleys to get over here, because they didn\u2019t want their neighbors to know they were coming here. It was the original walk of shame.<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

First, you get to know the artsy, eclectic neighborhood that is Pullman, as well as its rich history. Then there\u2019s the street that Argus calls home \u2013 once dubbed \u201cSchlitz Row.\u201d Then there\u2019s the century-old building itself \u2013 former stables from which horse-drawn carriages once hauled cases of Schlitz throughout the South Side. There\u2019s even a Schlitz \u201ctied house\u201d a few doors down, complete with its Schlitz globe still intact above the front door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, and likely best of all, you get the Argus crew \u2013 artsy and eclectic, just like the neighborhood they call home. The neighborhood\u2019s founder, George Pullman, was legendary for his prohibition on alcohol sales in his \u201cmodel town\u201d on the east side of what are now the Metra Electric tracks. But Argus sits on the west side of those tracks, in what is technically part of Roseland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen Joseph Schlitz purchased these two square blocks, they became home to bars, brothels, gambling \u2013 everything that was good (or bad, depending on what you like),\u201d Lubovich explains. \u201cPullman workers would walk through alleys to get over here, because they didn\u2019t want their neighbors to know they were coming here. It was the original walk of shame.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I won\u2019t ruin all of Lubovich\u2019s enjoyable yarns \u2013 they, too, are worth the trip – but he knows his neighborhood history and has fun with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But this isn\u2019t a history tour, it\u2019s a brewery tour and it begins in the tasting room upstairs. And much like the tour itself, the tasting room isn\u2019t like one you\u2019ve visited before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe want it to feel like you\u2019re hanging out with friends, having a beer in the basement bar,\u201d Lubovich proudly proclaims. \u201cBut I promise you, we\u2019re not gonna run out of dad\u2019s beer.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sadly, with the needed license not yet available in the neighborhood, that tasting room isn\u2019t open outside of tour schedules, nor can they sell beer to-go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s more like it massages you \u2013 and who doesn\u2019t like a good massage?<\/blockquote>
Still, we learn a bit about the father-son team of Bob and Patrick Jensen, who started this brewery together in 2009, thinking that with its sliding wooden doors, industrial-grade flooring and brick fa\u00e7ade, perhaps it was once a firehouse. Those second-story floors were built sturdy enough to hold horses, they later learned, so what\u2019s a few fermenting tanks? All of the brewing takes place on that second floor. You get an idea of what the building is made of as you ride up the original elevator that once hoisted horses and kegs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Jensen family\u2019s efforts to advance from home brewers to production brewers is noticeable in the investments they\u2019ve made in the building, as well as the quality of the beer they\u2019re producing. Among other honors, Argus earned a World Beer Cup bronze medal last year for its Holsteiner Lager, the easy-drinking marzen that started our recent tour. Their Pegasus IPA is one that Lubovich described best: \u201cin a world of extreme beers, it\u2019s not gonna punch you in the mouth with its hops. It\u2019s more like it massages you \u2013 and who doesn\u2019t like a good massage?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Likewise, he described Leopold, their barrel-aged scotch ale, as \u201ca sessionable barrel-aged scotch ale, if such a thing can exist.\u201d It does and it is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After a good 30 minutes of generous sampling, we did eventually get to that brewery tour. There, we learned\u2026. well, you know\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Argus Brewery is located at 11314 S. Front St., just steps from the Metra Electric\u2019s 111th St.\/Kensington stop. Tours are available at 12:30pm and 2pm every Saturday and can be booked atargusbrewery.com. (Insider\u2019s note: check Groupon for an even better deal)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
