{"id":258,"date":"2010-04-08T10:00:25","date_gmt":"2010-04-08T15:00:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.guysdrinkingbeer.com\/?p=258"},"modified":"2018-02-06T14:27:26","modified_gmt":"2018-02-06T20:27:26","slug":"stone-arrogant-bastard","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.guysdrinkingbeer.com\/stone-arrogant-bastard\/","title":{"rendered":"Stone From The Streets: Arrogant Bastard, Off The Shelf"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Stone (infamously) says:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>&#8220;This is an aggressive beer.\u00a0 You probably won&#8217;t like it.\u00a0 It is quite doubtful that you have the taste or sophistication to be able to appreciate an ale of this quality or depth.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.guysdrinkingbeer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/ARROGANT1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8357\" src=\"https:\/\/www.guysdrinkingbeer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/ARROGANT1.jpg\" alt=\"ARROGANT1\" width=\"449\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><em>Stone Arrogant Bastard Ale<\/em><br \/>\n<em>American Strong Ale, 7.20% ABV<\/em><em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Be the above warning as it may, I gave it a shot regardless. I may not have the most sophisticated palate in the world, but damn it, if I can handle a <a href=\"https:\/\/karlwithak.tumblr.com\/post\/444352848\/this-is-a-double-crooked-tree-ipa-draft-that-i\">Dark Horse Double Crooked Tree<\/a> every now and again, maybe I can take on the challenge that is the Arrogant Bastard Ale.\u00a0 Am I tough enough?\u00a0 I doubt it.\u00a0 But I&#8217;ll chance it.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The real question is: Since we&#8217;ve been so spoiled over the past week with city-wide Stone Insanity, will the off-the-shelf product still impress the average beer drinker?\u00a0 And not just the complete beer lunatics like ourselves who&#8217;ve blown out our palates on the special release Stone in bars across town?\u00a0 That remains to be seen.<\/p>\n<p>While Ryan and Andrew were out and about on the town at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guysdrinkingbeer.com\/2010\/04\/02\/arrogance-is-bliss-a-night-of-stone-brewing-in-chicago\/\">Twisted Spoke<\/a> and <a title=\"Stone Invades Whole Foods\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guysdrinkingbeer.com\/stone-invades-whole-foods\/\">Whole Foods<\/a>, I was stumbling into my local beer distribution location to find something to enjoy on a lazy indoor Saturday night.\u00a0 And lo and behold, there in the cooler looking back at me, was a lonesome bottle of Arrogant Bastard Ale.<\/p>\n<p>So I bought it.\u00a0 And I drank it.\u00a0 And I liked it&#8230;<em>mostly<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>First off, make no mistake &#8211; this beer pours beautifully.\u00a0 Into a pint glass, it was a nice deep red\/amber color, with a pillowy off-white head.\u00a0 Medium body, and a pretty well-balanced fully rounded taste.<\/p>\n<p>Hops are present up front and pretty sharp &#8211; certainly no citrus taste like we detected in the <a title=\"From The Cellar: Stone Old Guardian 3 Year Vertical 2008-2010\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guysdrinkingbeer.com\/stone-old-guardian-3-year-vertical\">&#8217;09 Old Guardian<\/a>.\u00a0 They did linger for a bit, but again, not as extreme as I was expecting.\u00a0 Beyond that&#8230;I actually thought it was mellow.<\/p>\n<p>Is it because I&#8217;ve begun to associate Stone with the more gargantuan flavors that I&#8217;ve gotten used to?\u00a0 Is it because when you call your beer an Arrogant Bastard you&#8217;re giving yourself a tall order to fill?\u00a0 Or is this Arrogant Bastard a little less arrogant than previous years?<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps a vertical tasting in the future will answer that question.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve had Arrogant Bastards in the past and remember being more blown away by the taste and &#8220;hugeness&#8221; of the Stone flagship brew.\u00a0 Maybe I&#8217;m not, as the above label mentions, <em>&#8220;worthy.&#8221;<\/em> But overall, I found the Arrogant Bastard to actually be a
