{"id":436,"date":"2010-04-30T10:00:44","date_gmt":"2010-04-30T15:00:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.guysdrinkingbeer.com\/?p=436"},"modified":"2021-08-25T19:52:02","modified_gmt":"2021-08-26T00:52:02","slug":"the-guys-guide-finding-the-one","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.guysdrinkingbeer.com\/the-guys-guide-finding-the-one\/","title":{"rendered":"Finding THE ONE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Now, before you start thinking, &#8220;what have the guys been drinking that made them decide to dispense dating advice?&#8221;\u00a0 This is not an article about dating.\u00a0 For reasons beyond our control, the three of us have stumbled into awesome relationships with really great women.\u00a0 And, therefore, we don&#8217;t know how to date anymore.<\/p>\n<p>This article is about finding the right beer to serve at your wedding reception.\u00a0 Years ago I would have been happy with whatever beer was provided, as long as it was free.\u00a0 But that was long before I fell head-over-heels for craft beer.\u00a0 And now that I&#8217;m the groom I can not, with a clear conscience, allow my guests to drink &#8220;fizzy yellow beer.&#8221;\u00a0 Also, my soon-to-be wife and I would have to drink it too and there is NO way that was happening.<\/p>\n<p>So, without further adieu, The Guys guide to choosing the right beer or beers for your wedding reception<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Find a location that will allow you to bring in you own beer<\/strong>.\u00a0 This was the <em>only<\/em> question I had when we visited three different locales for our reception.\u00a0 Chances are, wherever you go, you will have the standard Bud\/Bud Light and Miller\/Miller Lite offered with the first tier bar package.\u00a0 Go one higher and you get&#8230;Heineken.\u00a0 So, even shelling out a few bucks more per person is not going to get you any craft beer.\u00a0 If you want it you are probably going to have to bring it with you.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Just because you can get a keg of it doesn&#8217;t mean you should<\/strong>.\u00a0 Would I be willing to shell out for a keg of Bell&#8217;s Hopslam or Three Floyds Dreadnaught to have it at my wedding reception?\u00a0 You betcha.\u00a0 Would I be standing by the time we got to the mother-son dance?\u00a0 Nope.\u00a0 When I first started shopping around liquor stores in Chicago I was overwhelmed with my options.\u00a0 You name it and chances are someone can get it.\u00a0 So how do you narrow things down?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pick a style that you like and your guests will like<\/strong>.\u00a0 I know, I know &#8211; &#8220;It&#8217;s <em>my<\/em> wedding reception and I&#8217;ll serve whatever the hell I want.&#8221;\u00a0 But, let&#8217;s be honest, when that keg of German <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Smoked_beer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rauchbier<\/a> is only half gone are you &#8212; the groom &#8212; going to lead the charge to kill it before the night is over?\u00a0 Not if you want to stay married longer than 24 hours you won&#8217;t.\u00a0 So, how did we handle it? \u00a0 Initially, my fiance and I decided on two styles; a wheat beer or lager for the masses and an IPA for us and our beer savvy friends.\u00a0 Which, in the end, was paired down to one keg of an IPA.<\/li>\n<li><strong>But, there so many IPA\/Imperial Stouts\/Wheat beers out there, which one should I get?<\/strong> This may sound a little corny, but pick something that means something to you and your fiance.\u00a0 When my fiance and I first started dating she lived in Lansing, MI and I lived in Chicago.\u00a0 One weekend in Michigan we decided to take the short drive down to Dark Horse in Marshall.\u00a0 The beer was awesome, the food was great and the people there were really cool.\u00a0 In fact, anytime we are close to Marshall we make it a point to stop in to Dark Horse for a pint or three.\u00a0 So, the first beer on the list was Dark Horse&#8217;s Crooked Tree IPA.\u00a0 Now that we are both living in Chicago we thought it would be fun to have something local as well, so we chose Half Acre&#8217;s Daisy Cutter as our second beer.\u00a0 As for the third choice, well, there is no emotional tie to Surly Furious but it&#8217;s a damn good beer so it made the cut.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Now comes the fun part &#8211; drinking beer to find THE ONE<\/strong>.\u00a0 In order to do this I scoured <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beermenus.com\/chicago\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">beermenus.com<\/a> to see if there were any bars in Chicago that carried all three on tap.\u00a0 Success!\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.risquechicago.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Risque Cafe<\/a> on Clark had all three.\u00a0 So, one Thursday after work, we strolled over there to pick the beer we would have at our wedding reception.\u00a0 In the end, Dark Horse&#8217;s Crooked Tree won out over Daisy Cutter and Furious.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.guysdrinkingbeer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/weddingbeers.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-441 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.guysdrinkingbeer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/weddingbeers.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"695\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.guysdrinkingbeer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/weddingbeers.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.guysdrinkingbeer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/weddingbeers-600x407.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.guysdrinkingbeer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/weddingbeers-768x521.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nI am sure, for some of you, this seems like common sense.\u00a0 But we went back-and-forth for months on what to serve at the wedding.\u00a0 At first, because of the number of people we invited, we thought we would need two kegs.\u00a0 Then, we trimmed it down to one.\u00a0 Okay, now we need to decide what to serve.\u00a0 Bell&#8217;s Oberon or Hopslam?\u00a0 Metropolitan Flywheel Bright?\u00a0 Half Acre Gossamer?\u00a0 Three Floyds Gumballhead?\u00a0 Some guys homebrew that a buddy was pushing?\u00a0 The aforementioned Daisy Cutter, Crooked Tree and Furious?\u00a0 They were all in the mix at one time or another. But once you narrow the focus then the job, and this can be a job, becomes much easier.<\/p>\n<p>Hopefully these tips make one step of the planning process a little less stressful and also help keep &#8220;fizzy yellow beer&#8221; out of the hands of your wedding guests.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Finding the right beer to serve at your wedding reception can be a lot of work.
