O’Fallon says:
“Dark, rich and smoky…this classic porter is brewed with 63% German smoked malt and makes a perfect after dinner (or anytime) sipper for those who love a “bigger” beer.”
O’Fallon Smoked Porter
Porter, 6% ABV
I had this, from a bottle, the night my wife and I indulged in beer and bacon at Paddy Long’s. Even though the last paring included Stone’s Smoked Porter, I decided another smokey beer was in order. Remembering past O’Fallon beers I’ve enjoyed, 5 Day IPA and Wheach, I thought I would give O’Fallon Smoked Porter a try.
The beer pours a used grill grate black with just a slight hint of tan head.
The smell is a mix of charcoal briquettes, mesquite barbecue sauce, bacon and chocolate. In fact, after my wife gave it a whiff she said, “this smells like chocolate and hot dogs.” If that is not a ringing endorsement for a smoked porter than I don’t know what is!
The taste was just as complex as the smell. The flavor is very smokey and sweet with hints of brown sugar and chocolate. The intense smokiness is very reminiscent of a German Rauchbier – which damn near tastes like the beer was fermented in a grill.
This is, hands down, my favorite offering to date from O’Fallon. And I’m pretty pumped to know it’s at a few bars in and around Chicago. This would go great with just about anything you plan on grilling this Memorial Day Weekend.
